Boys & Girls Clubs Day for Kids set for September 15th;
CLUBS PREPARE FOR FUN-FILLED DAY CELEBRATING KIDS
Survey: Kids Wish Parents Would Work Less, Spend More Outdoor Time with Them, Adults Spending Little Time Supervising Kids Online
August 3, 2007 Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Lucie County is teeing up to celebrate “Boys & Girls Clubs Day for Kids,” (BGC Day for Kids) a major annual family event highlighting the value of meaningful time between caring adults and children. In St. Lucie County, BGC Day for Kids will be celebrated with hundreds of parents and kids participating in an event at Lyngate Park in Port St. Lucie.
The celebration is September 15th; 4pm 8pm at Lyngate Park and free food and activities are available. Guest speakers, food, volleyball, scavenger hunt, face painting, live entertainment, giveaways, kick ball, bounce houses and many other fun things are available for the entire family.
Unlike most other industrialized nations, the U.S. is one of the few nations that does not have an official day set aside to honor its young people. In a country ranked first in wealth and productivity, we do not have a day in which we recognize our most precious resource. Americans recognize the link between spending meaningful time with their kids and the tough issues facing young people, but say they don’t have the time, skills or resources to do as much for their children as they feel they should.
Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) is spearheading a national effort to establish BGC Day for Kids as an “official day” to celebrate our most valuable resource our kids. While September 15 is the official day created to bring attention to the messages of BGC Day for Kids, in reality every day should be a day for kids.
To assist parents, practitioners and other caring adults, BGCA has created engaging educational resources to help them encourage and develop positive relationships with kids. A year-round web site, www.dayforkids.org, will provide tools, resources and tips that support their interactions with young people.
“We created Boys & Girls Clubs Day for Kids to foster stronger relationships between adults and children by educating them on the importance and value of spending meaningful time together,” says Ginny Dennison, Unit Director of the Boys and Girls Club Ken Pruitt Unit. “BGC Day for Kids will provide the opportunity for every adult to take a break, celebrate and renew their commitment to our community’s children.”
Boys & Girls Club Participates in Summer Learning Day
August 6, 2007 (St. Lucie County, FL) Boys & Girls Club of St. Lucie County participated in Summer Learning Day on July 12th by getting their members involved in multiple activities that were educational, healthy and safe.
Gov. Charlie Crist declared July 12, 2007, Summer Learning Day in the state of Florida. This proclamation recognizes that summer learning programs have a meaningful impact on the education, health and safety of children, and that more young people need to be engaged in learning activities over the summer.
Kids from the Boys & Girls of St. Lucie County along with other members of the Florida Afterschool Network (FAN) participated in a multitude of events such as: a Fieldtrip to Kennedy Space Center, Tours with the Mets for healthy habits, Fire Safety Education, Library and research projects, Karate lessons, and many more.
Brenda Stokes, Operations Director for the BGC Kidstop programs explained, “Learning is always a part of our day!” The children at the clubs were exposed to a variety of new activities from cooking classes for a healthy mind body and soul, to Spanish lessons, to art classes making African tribal masks.
Summer Learning Day is a time for communities to celebrate the importance of high-quality summer learning opportunities in the lives of young people and their families. Events in Florida and around the country showcased summer programs and raised awareness about how summer programs:
-
Send young people back to school ready to learn;
-
Support working families; and
-
Keep children safe and healthy
The Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University coordinates Summer Learning Day activities throughout the country. Last year, there were more than 100 events in 20 states that focused attention on the critical role that summer learning programs play in the lives of children, their parents, and their communities.
